Development of Tunbridge Mill, Chew Magna
For many years since its last use as a wholesale agricultural goods warehouse
the semi-derelict mill and its poor-quality ancillary outbuildings have been an
eyesore close to the centre of Chew Magna. Under the Sky (through the
JT Group), acquired the site and has prepared a design for its future as a
centre for activities in the village and the surrounding area concerned with
sustainable living in all its aspects.
The mill building - not Listed but of some
historic interest - will be refurbished and the ancillary buildings will be
renovated or replaced.
The aim is to provide a right setting for the mill, a
harmonious group of buildings and a setting that does justice to the leat and
riverside location.
The project is being pursued with the closest attention to sustainability by
all the consultants and the ambition is to achieve a 'carbon-positive'
development with the energy generated by a turbine in the river not only over time off-setting the energy cost of constructing the building but also
going on to supply energy to neighbouring buildings.
